The McGill Conference, “Future Humanities: Transforming Graduate Studies for the Future of Canada,” will bring together work by more than twenty Canadian universities, Francophone and Anglophone, on how to reform and strengthen humanities graduate education. This national initiative takes its start from the White Paper on the Future of the PhD in the Humanities, recruits the most original and creative thinkers from university administration, faculty, students, and recent graduates, and includes leading figures from media, government, and business, and from policy organizations such as the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies and the Conference Board of Canada.

The McGill conference will be the culmination of nearly two years of work on humanities graduate education, but it will also be the start of a long-term undertaking with four principal goals:

  • to develop new, innovative humanities graduate programs;
  • to change the culture of the academy by making it more outward-looking and socially proactive;
  • to transform the public profile of humanities MAs and PhDs by publicizing and developing their capacity for leadership in fields inside and outside the university;
  • to create a larger, more outward-looking academic community by attracting back a significant number of PhDs with careers outside the university to mentor in-course graduate students and advise universities that are rethinking their graduate programs.
